In this article, I explain what I learn from this book. “ Show your work”.
This book is written by Austin Kleon.
He is an NYtimes best selling author of “Steal like an artist” and other books. This book( “Show your work”) is about being a creator in your digital age.
Nowadays people are becoming a creator and paying their bills or being available to take a nap anytime.
This book helps you about how people are becoming a creator. I learn a lot from this book and today I’m going to write about what I learned from this book. So let’s get started.
1. Overnight success is a myth.
Most people think success comes from talent or luck.
But the truth is how you make a stock of work on the internet.
For example, Ed Sheeran who’s one of the most famous singers is not a good singer at first. He does a lot of practice and show his song on Youtube and become famous. His first upload was 12 years ago, meaning he sang for more than 10 years.
It’s like a stock. The more you show your work, your mountain is getting bigger and bigger. And the quality is getting higher and higher.
2. Social media is a useful tool to show your work.
Social media is the best place to show your work.
If you love writing, write about your passion on Twitter, Medium, or in your Newsletter. Or if you like to take videos your platform is Youtube or Tiktok.
I’m not saying you should take your selfie and post it on Instagram.
We are talking about business. If you have no idea what you want to do, try to help people on the internet. For example, write a blog and help people with your word. Make a video about what you love and make people happy. Don’t bother your creativity by overthinking.
3. Sharing and over sharing
We need to discern sharing and oversharing.
Once you become familiar with your work, it‘s time to improve your quality.
When I was writing on Medium first, I couldn’t write more than 500 words. And I’m Japanese which means I’m not a native English speaker.
So I set my goal to write 300~400 words for each article and I write more than 20 articles. After that, I set another goal to write 600~700 words and now some articles are more than 1000 words which are amazing for me.
So you need to improve the quality of your work everyday.
4. Become a good storyteller
The most important part of being a creator or entrepreneur is you need to master storytelling.
Successful YouTubers, Entrepreneurs, and Creator are good storytelling. But why?
“Business is all from emotion”.
This is the word from Robert Cialdini who’s one of the best Psychologists and Marketers in the world.
People are buying things because their emotions are moving.
Logan Paul’s Youtube editor Hayden Hillier Smith always says this word when he teaches video editing,
“If your video is the same emotion in the first and last, you’re not a good editor”.
Storytelling is one of the best skills in the world.
So how do we practice storytelling? There is a good structure in the book, so if you want to know that buy this “Show your work”.
5. Don’t desire for following.
There are some weird articles on Medium.
“Follow me and I will follow you”.
I know you want to get 100 followers and monetize your medium.
But is this a good strategy in the long term?
If you want to be a creator, in the long run, you need to make a strong relationship with your audience.
Follow for following is not a long-term strategy. They just want to satisfy their acknowledge desire.
I know this is difficult because honestly when I was writing first, I was one of the men who desire to acknowledge.
So I give some tips for how I overcome this problem.

6. Don’t be afraid to make money.
People when they start showing their work on the internet like are afraid to make money.
Especially, Japanese like me. I was not sure that am I available to write my article and publish it to only members.
But if you want to be an artist or writer or do other creative work, you need to pay your bill. Furthermore, you can make more high-quality work if you became a full-time creator.
“We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies.”
This is a quote from Walt Disney.
Money will be one of the motivations, while you’re creating. Because honestly, I will never keep writing when I don’t make money.
There are other tools to make money as a creator, for example, Patreon, Buy me a coffee, and Gofund. There are many services to help the creator to pay.
But the other side, if you make a decision to make money as a creator, you always have the ambition to scale it. The audience is really excited about your growth.
So think bigger, expand your audience, and don’t be afraid to scale your business.
